Cambodia
From the amazing temples hidden in the jungle to the beautiful white beaches, from the bustling cities to the remote rural towns, Cambodia has many things to offer for all types of travel. It is truly the “Kingdom of Wonder” that is ready to inspire visitors traveling to the country.
Phnom Penh
Located at the junction of Tonle Sap and Mekong River, Phnom Penh has been the capital of Cambodia since 1865 during the French Protectorate. Despite damages of the US-Vietnam War and especially severe sufferings from the “Pol Pot” genocide deserting the city for five years, Phnom Penh has revived strongly and is now developing rapidly, becoming the center of commercial, political and culture of the Kingdom. However, it still retains its pre-war charm with wide tree-lined boulevards, French colonial architecture as well as colorful vibrant local markets. The Royal Palace, National Museum, Wat Phnom temple… are some of the top attractions that cannot be missed in Phnom Penh.
Siem Reap and Angkor Temples
Siem Reap, situated 314km northwest of Phnom Penh, is home to the archeology Angkor Complex with the famous Angkor Wat temple, a national symbol of the Kingdom as well as the 8th World Wonder – UNESCO World Heritage Site. Many temples in the complex are also worth visiting including Angkor Thom, Bayon and Ta Prohm temple where the famous Hollywood movie Tomb Raider was filmed. Also, a dinner with traditional Apsara dance show and boat ride to see the floating villages on Tonle Sap Lake are must-do activities on the list traveling there. Thanks to the newly built Siem Reap – Angkor International Airport, Siem Reap is becoming the main country’s tourist hub and hoping to welcome more and more visitors coming to explore the beauty of the jungle temples.
Sambor Prei Kuk Temple
Sambor Prei Kuk Temple, the third Cambodia’s UNESCO World Heritage Site, is located in Kampong Thom Province dated from early 7th to 9th centuries of Chenla Kingdom before the Angkor Wat temple. The main area comprises three complexes with temples scattered over the forest, among them some of the most ancient structures of the country and still well-intact. The Sambor Prei Kuk temple is conveniently visited on the way from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap along with other spots including the ancient bridge Kampong Kdei and a local carving village.
Preah Vihear Temple
The Preah Vihear Temple is located on the edge of giant cliff of Dangrek Mountains in the far north Preah Vihear Province bordering with Thailand. The well-preserved ancient Hindu temple was constructed from 8th to 14th century reflecting various architectural styles and influenced and believed to pre-date Angkor Wat by a hundred years. It was an intense ownership dispute between Cambodia and Thailand and is now still controversial place with signs of military along the way. A trip to this UNESCO World Heritage Site can easily be arranged from Siem Reap with visit to the house of Ta Mok in Anlong Veng, the former military commander of the Khmer Rouge, then onward to Four Thousand Islands in Laos.
Koh Rong
Koh Rong is a group of islands located about 25 kilometers off the Sihanoukville’s coast in the Gulf of Thailand. It is well-known for its long white sandy beach, colorful coral reefs suited with diving or snorkeling, dense jungle terrain dotted with palm trees and waterfalls as well as small local villages around the island providing the perfect getaway vacation to couples or just a break from the packed Cambodian journey. There is a variety of accommodation from homestay to luxury resorts suitable with guests' needs and budget. Also, traveling to the island only takes about 45 minutes by speed boats from Sihanoukville town and short boat ride to nearby islands makes it even more attractive and becomes another hot spot destination besides Phnom Penh and Siem Reap.
